What Does a Cosmetologist Do in Florida?

Living in Florida can have a dreamy appeal. There’s lots to do, like heading to the beach, and the fashion industry is big, too! If you have a passion for beauty, Florida is a great place to pursue an education in cosmetology. There are a lot of schools to choose from like Artistic Nails and Beauty Academy. But, the first thing to know is what can a cosmetologist do?

Hair Skills

A cosmetologist is often referred to as someone who does hair, like a hairstylist or salon stylist. Depending on the program, a cosmetologist learns a variety of skills including but not limited to hair techniques. As part of our cosmetology program, an aspiring cosmetologist can learn all sorts of hair skills, including:

  • Haircutting
  • Hair shaping
  • Texture services
  • Scalp and hair conditioning
  • And more!

A career in the beauty industry could also include keeping up with trends like a natural curly look, a bob, textured braids, and bangs.

Nails, Nails, Nails

Hair isn’t the only thing a cosmetologist can do! A cosmetologist can learn nail services such as pedicures and manicures. Artistic Nail and Beauty Academy is unique, because our students can learn how to do nail extensions as a service they can offer clients.

Our students learn how to shape nails in almond, square, and oval shapes, just to name a few. Extensions can add length to someone’s natural nail and makes it possible to create a variety of stunning nail art designs.

Makeup for That Big Day

Cosmetologists are makeup artists, too! Clients can come into the salon and get their makeup done by a cosmetologist. No matter if it’s for fashion shows or festivals or more personal events like weddings, prom, or graduation, a good cosmetologist can create unforgettable makeup looks.

Facials and Skincare

Facial services have been part of the beauty industry for years! If you are going to school for cosmetology, you might learn the basics of skincare, too. Learning skincare services provides even more opportunities of services you can offer to future clients. For example, a client can have a full self-care day by booking a facial and a hair appointment!

However, cosmetologists are not to be confused with estheticians, who also provide skincare and facial services. An esthetician has a more extensive training on skincare, not hairstyling. Learn some of the differences between a cosmetologist and an esthetician.

Socializing and Creating in the Beauty Industry

It’s no secret that a cosmetologist can be a social butterfly. Working in a salon can be a social place, because you can have several co-workers who might love to talk your ear off. Even working alone can involve chatting with a few clients per day.

Because the beauty industry is such a social industry, cosmetologists can also become business owners and marketers. As part of an education at Artistic Nails and Beauty Academy, we teach future beauty professionals how to market themselves, provide good customer service to those who come into their salon, and more.

Along with the business and marketing, cosmetologists can have a lot of creative freedom. They can add their own creativity to their services through hair colors, makeup shades, and painting. Does a creative career sound like something you would love?

How To Become a Cosmetologist

Now that you know what a cosmetologist does, you can take the next step, learning how to become one! Each state has their own cosmetology licensure requirements. Some of the requirements in Florida include completing 1,200 school hours by a state-approved school, and sitting for a state exam.
