How To Become A Barber

Become A Barber

When a woman needs a fresh hair style or an updated color, she heads to the salon where she enjoys a luxurious experience with her favorite hairstylist. A man, however, is more likely to go to the local barber for a hair cut, a beard trim and a great conversation with the guys.

The barber shop is more than just a place where men go for a quick cut and style. It’s a gathering place where the barber himself is often the center of the community. Have you ever thought that you might like to be a part of this camaraderie and community? Here’s how to become a barber in Florida.

The Job Description of a Barber

A barber is often defined as an individual who cuts hair for men. A barber often also provides clients with beard trimming or shaving services, if they so choose. A barber also may be responsible for:

  • Shaping hair into a desired style.
  • Providing facial treatments in order to properly maintain facial hair.
  • Sterilize and maintain equipment needed to perform job responsibilities, such as razors, scissors and clippers.
  • Maintain the barber shop facility by sweeping and cleaning.
  • Massage the head, neck, shoulders and scalp to complete the experience.
  • Conduct financial transactions and manage the books for the shop.

How to Become a Barber

Those who are aspiring to become a barber must first begin with learning more about the field. A hands-on educational program is necessary to develop the skills needed to perfectly execute the cuts, styles and shave services that clients expect from their barbers. The barber program at Artistic Nails & Beauty Academy is 1,200 clock hours. The average student completes the program within 10 to 14 months, and is prepared to pass their licensing exam at that time.

Florida Requirements for Barbers

In Florida, a barber must be at least 16 years old and have completed 1,200 educational hours at a barber school in the state in order to take the licensing exam. In addition, all applicants must complete a 2-hour HIV/AIDS course for barbers. The course must be completed within two years of taking the exam.
